Fort Delaware & Fort Delaware State Park
|
|
Fort Delaware, located on Pea Patch Island in the middle of the Delaware River, is a
Union fortress dating back to 1859. This fort was originally built to protect the ports of Philadelphia and Wilmington. It's most noted use was as a prison for Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. Today it is a State park open to the public. The fort has undergone a 20 million dollar restoration and is staffed by historians and history students who dress and act in the era of the Civil War. Living history exhibitions and tours are given daily. Reenactments with participation reenactors from regional historical groups take place on many week-ends during the summer season. Ghost tours are offered on select evenings during the spring, summer and fall. These tours include enactments and story telling by a famous area story teller. You are invited to tour the fort and explore the ramparts, soldiers' quarters, parade grounds, gun emplacements and much more. Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island can be seen from most rooms at the Olde Canal Inn.
Pea Patch Island is more than a historical fort. It is also offers many natural
treasures. It is the home of many different species of herons, egrets and ibis. It is the largest Atlantic Coast nesting ground north of Florida for wading birds.
Pea Patch Island is reached by ferry that departs from a dock on the waterfront in
Delaware City across the street from the Olde Canal Inn. The ferry also traverses the river and dock at Fort Mott on the New Jersey side. |

Fort Dupont & Fort Dupont State Park

Named for Rear Admiral Samuel Francis du Pont, this fort was actively used as a
military base from the Civil War through World War II. It was used as an active fort and training facility for all or these wars. During WW II it was used to house prisoners from Rommel's Africa Corps.
